BTA Celebrates Milestones

The Butler Transit Authority celebrated milestones Thursday, April 11, 2019, with a ceremony and ribbon cutting. The Authority celebrated three major milestones: 30 Years of Service, the conversion of its fleet to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the opening of its CNG Station.

Celebrating 30 Years….
In September 1989, the City of Butler and Butler Township created a resolution to create the Butler Township City Joint Municipal Transit Authority. Over the years, the Authority has undergone many changes including a shortened name change, rebranding, extended service, commuter service and much more.

CNG Conversion…
The Butler Transit Authority began its conversion from diesel fuel to compressed natural gas vehicles in 2017. Three, made in the USA Gillig buses and five made in the USA MCI commuter buses arrived fall 2017. Three additional Gillig buses just arrived in March 2019 and they complete the conversion of BTA’s fleet from diesel to CNG. The Authority estimates saving roughly $160,000 annually based on current diesel costs and usage of roughly 140,000 gallons per year.

CNG Fueling Station…
Work began on the CNG fueling Station August 2018. In February 2019, BTA completed the training, testing and received the readiness certification for the station. From fall 2017 until this February, BTA utilized the temporary fueling unit from Compass Natural Gas. BTA is excited to usher in this clean alternative fuel.
